The **Saltos de Jima Natural Monument** protects a series of waterfalls and pools on the Jima river in Bonao. The river rises in Las Neblinas and tumbles through rocks and forest before reaching the Rincón reservoir.

## Getting there

Drive from Bonao. The road ends in the community of **Charco Prieto**, where the trail starts. If your car isn’t suited to the last stretch, local motorbike taxis (motoconchos) can take you. In Google Maps or Waze, search for “Monumento Natural Saltos de Jima”.

## The trail

The main trail is **1.8 km** long and follows a stream that rises in the Las Neblinas Scientific Reserve. Expect steep wooden stairs and log steps. Visitors report the first waterfall is about 30 minutes in and that the first two falls are currently open; other sections may be closed. The monument reopened in April 2023 after about five months of work on stairs, railings and restrooms.

## Hours and fees

Several guides list 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Sources disagree on the fee: some say entry is free, others mention about RD$200 per person with a guide. Confirm on site and bring cash.

## What to bring

- Closed shoes with good grip (flip-flops slip on wet stairs).
- Water, snacks and a bag for your trash.
- Swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen.

## When not to go

Access closes on rainy days because the river rises. If it rained in the mountains, pick another day. Keep children within reach on the stairs and in the water.

## Make a weekend of it

Stay at Tony Ranch in Piedra Blanca, south of Bonao: 16 rooms with hot water from RD$4,000 a night, a pool, a jacuzzi and the Maimón river about 50 m away. More ideas in [things to do in Bonao](https://www.tonyranchrd.com/en/guide/things-to-do-in-bonao/).
